Satscenes :: In the post

In the post today came some gifts from a friend of mine who lives on a reservation in the USA.  We have known each other for nearly five years and are well known for our light hearted bickering on the subjects of Native American spirituality and atheism. Despite surface appearances we each hold a great deal of respect for each others beliefs which is why, I think, our friendship works. It also helps that he is, quite literally, the most beautiful man I have ever seen.

(PST, don´t tell him! His head is already way too big!)

Satscenes : Dusk in Torrevieja Centre

Better late than never – here is my SatScene for the 20th!

SatScenes :: Hoy en la cocina

Today I purchased ingredients ready for a special meal tomorrow.  Tomorrow we are having a local Spanish peasant soup with plenty of chickpeas, garlic, a special blend of dried vegetables (courtesy of El Corte Ingles) and a few local preserved meats thrown in for extra flavour (chorizo, morcilla etc)…

After which we will be having my very own recipe Goulash, largely inspired by a Chef I met whilst in Greece on vacation many years ago.

A fresh fruit salad follows for dessert (with a schnapps flavoured syrup)

SatScenes :: Café Bombón

Café Bombón – strong black expresso coffee with a dash of “Leche Condensada” (condensed milk) is one of my favourite coffees mid morning. So pretty when you first prepare it, seems such a shame when you are forced to stir prior to drinking! The first time I saw it I was intrigued – in a small bar in the center of Huescar.

The thing about this coffee is it is really very sweet. I think the Spanish, to a certain extent, have a much sweeter touth than the British – especially when it comes to sweets. For me, Café Bombón is on the edge of my sweet tolerance but I adore its creamy sweetness with just an edge of bitterness from the very strong black coffee. There was a lady once in Alicante who, when handed her coffee, proceeded to add two further sugars – even now my teeth go numb with just the memory!

SatScenes : Wall Messages in Torrevieja

The first is fairly self explanatory since it is written in English.

The second is a message which roughly translates to “against the crisis, general strike”. In Spain “crisis” is used to refer to the current economic situation – “la crisis”.  The reference to the left “PCPE” refers to the Partido Comunista de los Pueblos de España (on wikipedia)

Not a happy local population at the moment.

SatScenes: Manchester Tart

On the menu today at Casa Fembat is this delectable Manchester Tart, made by yours truly… Dessert sorted.

SatScenes #2 Hot Dog

Unhappy with earlier submission. Here is a scene from my Saturday, taken a couple of hours ago. My JRT, Joe,  suffering from the heat. We all are. Shortly after taking this he flopped dramatically on the marble flooring , a position he has held ever since.

Yes, those really are Dumbo size ears. We are expecting him to take flight any day now.

Satscenes : My First Ever

Its a little late but, as I am told often, these things are better late than never. It seems to be my life philosophy. Today was all about art appreciation. Not the kind you find in a stuffy Gallery, where self proclaimed critics attempt to persuade the tasteless masses that the blob of paint is actually a piece worth millions. No, I am speaking of art you will find anywhere – if only you take the time to open your eyes and really look.

There is a Graffiti artist who tours Torrevieja. You will find his works everywhere. I have never seen him and everyone I have spoken to has absolutely no idea who he is. But, on schedule, a piece of his work will suddenly appear. This particular piece is on the main street opposite Iceland. The photograph does not really do it justice – they are, well, beatiful. The detail is astonishing.
