SatScenes :: Café Bombón

Café Bombón – strong black expresso coffee with a dash of “Leche Condensada” (condensed milk) is one of my favourite coffees mid morning. So pretty when you first prepare it, seems such a shame when you are forced to stir prior to drinking! The first time I saw it I was intrigued – in a small bar in the center of Huescar.

The thing about this coffee is it is really very sweet. I think the Spanish, to a certain extent, have a much sweeter touth than the British – especially when it comes to sweets. For me, Café Bombón is on the edge of my sweet tolerance but I adore its creamy sweetness with just an edge of bitterness from the very strong black coffee. There was a lady once in Alicante who, when handed her coffee, proceeded to add two further sugars – even now my teeth go numb with just the memory!

  1. They do look lovely.

    It is strange, I love the smell of coffee and they look like they would be lovely. But I just can’t stand the taste of coffee.

    Strange girl I am.

    I know I will probably like it one day. I used to hate mushrooms, but now love them.

    :D

  2. I was first just intrigued by their appearance… one of those things you see across a crowded bar and desire immensely (used to be men so I guess I must be getting old!)

    Funny thing is when I first started to drink coffee in my teens I hated it. I only drank it because I wanted to be like my Mum. Gradually I acquired the taste and now I love the stuff… I like a really strong cafe solo here, served in a small cup with just enough sugar to take the edge off but not too much to be sweet. Delicious!

    This however is very sweet – jaw clenchingly sweet!

  3. It is the bitter after taste that coffee leaves in my mouth that I don’t like. I have tried quite a few different types over the years too, and haven’t found one that isn’t bitter (to me at least).

    About a year ago I had an odd craving for a latte. So got one and liked the initial taste of it, but the after taste was not good.

    I am sure I will find one I do like in the future. It is just finding it. I will let you make me one of these, sometime in the future, see if you can convert me, :D

  4. I didn’t used to like tea either, but will drink that occasionally now. Just find it quite a boring drink. :(

  5. They say if coffee leaves a bitter aftertaste it is poor quality. I am not sure how valid that is because I have had some very expensive coffees which were extremely bitter.

    I didnt drink tea for years. I hated the stuff and, bless me back then, I considered it frightfully common *sticks nose up in the air* (yes, I really was that far up my own ****). I still prefer herbal teas – especially Camomile & Limeflower from Twinnings. Yum!

  6. One coffee my Mum adores is Greek Coffee. Its made by boiling finely ground coffee beans, and is served thick and strong, and often sweetened. It is always unfiltered, with the coffee sediment at the bottom of the cup. She first had it when we stopped for a break at a little cafe halfway up a mountain on Kos and has obsessed about it since. We´ve tried a few ways to make it but failed terribly!
