“Read my lips: Words do not kill! People kill. Wild animals kill. But words… words have a totally different power. They enter in through our eyes and ears and work their way into our souls”
When I first heard an TV adaptation was being made of Terry Pratchett´s “Going Postal” I was both excited and dismayed. The problem you see is this – not only is Going Postal my favourite book out of all the Discworld novels, but the enigmatic Moist Von Lipwig is a character I hold in great esteem. Ususally I am fairly easy going where adaptations are concerned – I´m not a fan who often throws tantrums when a character is miscast or a plot changed… This time, I am afraid, it was different.
I had high expectations and I highly expected them to be unfulfilled.
I was wrong.
So, Robert Coyle wasn´t quite how I expected my darling Moist Von Lipwig to look, but a few minutes in I was hooked. He had a certain charm and this, for me, was an important quality to not overlook. In the book Moist is an exceptionally charming ex-con with the gift of the gab and Robert Coyle portrayed this perfectly. Clair Foy was simply delightful as chain smoking Adora Dearheart and although Charles Dance did not exactly push all my buttons as Lord Vetinari I still believe he gave a highly commendable performance. David Suchet, bless the man, was a little hammy as Reacher Gilt but its fantasy, one has to expect it now and again.
A highly commendable adaptation. I adored Hogfather. I found The Colour of Magic to be lacking in both script, plot and casting (Sorry Sean Astin, you completely ruined the character Twoflower for me!). But, Going Postal, is almost as wonderful as the book – and that, from me at least, is saying something.
